Two recruiting sergeants came from the Black Watch To markets and fairs some recruits for to catch And all that they listed was for forty an' twa So list my bonnie laddie and come a-wa C: For It's over the mountains and over the main Through Gibraltar to France and Spain Get a feather in your bonnet and a kilt upon your knee Enlist bonnie laddie and come a-wa with me Oh laddie, you don't know the danger you'd be in If your horses were to fright and your oxen were to run That greedy old farmer will never pay your fee So list bonnie laddie an' come a-wa with me It's everyday the barn and the field and the byre That old farmer thinks you'll never tire For it's a slavery job and one of low degree So list bonnie laddie an' come a-wa with me. Oh, laddie if ye've got a sweetheart in the town Or an angry wife and a daughter and a son The musket and the drum will rid you of 'em aw' So list bonnie laddie an' come a-wa

I'm lonesome since I crossed the hills, And o'er the moor that's sedgy; With heavy thoughts my mind is filled, Since parting with my lady E'er I return to view the place The tears doth fall and blind me, When I think on the charming grace Of the girl I left behind me. C: The girl I left, the girl I left, the girl I left behind me; If ever I cross that bridge again, I'll pick her up behind me The hours I remember well, When next to see doth move me The burning flames my heart doth tell, Since first she own'd she loved me: In search of some one fair and gay Several doth remind me; I know my darling loves me well, Though I left her behind me. C: The bees shall bless the land no more And the dove become a ranger; The falling water cease to roar, Before I'll ever change her: Each mortal promise faithful made, By her whose heart doth bind me; And bless the hours I pass away, With the girl I left behind me. C: My mind her image still retains, Whether asleep or waking; I hope to see my dear again, For her my heart is breaking: But if I chance to go that way, And she has not resigned me; I'll reconcile my mind and stay, With the girl I left behind me.

In Amsterdam there lived a maid, Mark well what I do say, In Amsterdam there lived a maid And she was mistress of her trade I’ll go no more a-rovin' with you, fair maid Chorus: A-rovin', a-rovin', since roving’s been my ru-i-in, I’ll go no more a-rovin' with you, fair maid. Her cheeks were red, her eyes were brown Mark well what I do say Her cheeks were red, her eyes were brown Her pretty hair was hanging down I'll go no more a-rovin' with you, fair maid break I took this maiden for a walk, Mark well what I do say, I took this maiden for a walk, And we had such a loving talk I’ll go no more a-rovin' with you, fair maid I kissed her once, I kissed her twice Mark well what I do say I kissed her once, I kissed her twice She said "Young man, that's awful nice" I'll go no more a-rovin' with you, fair maid break I gave this maid a parting kiss, Mark well what I do say, I gave this maid a parting kiss, When I got aboard, my money I missed. I’ll go no more a-rovin' with you, fair maid. Cx2

about

There's something about folk music. I've always loved how it spans generations and history and nationalities. I love the act of creating my own personal arrangements of songs that have existed for centuries. I love that they're imperfect cultural artifacts that give you clues about the world as it was before you existed. They're living organisms that truly evolve and change depending on whoever is singing them.

As an adult, I've developed a particular interest in Irish folk music, which has led me to explore the music of Great Britain and the surrounding countries as well. During the last five tumultuous years wherein I experienced a great many hardships, I have found great comfort and joy in the learning and adapting and playing of these songs. I hope you get some joy from my recordings of them.
